Rough, S2S, S3S and S4S prices: drying and milling costs

Follow the board from moisture condition and rough thickness to the finished section you can use.

Drying is part of the product

Green, air-dried and kiln-dried boards can have different rates because they include different processing and different remaining work. A drying label alone is not a measured moisture reading or a suitability guarantee. Ask the target and measured condition, storage history and intended service environment. Buying green stock for an immediate interior project can add drying time, handling, losses and schedule risk.

Surface preparation changes what is included

Rough lumber retains sawn surfaces. S2S generally means two surfaced faces; S3S usually adds one straight edge; S4S means all four sides are surfaced. Confirm the actual operations because local naming can vary. Hit-or-miss planing can reveal appearance without promising full clean-up. Ask whether the quoted price includes a guaranteed finished section or only a preliminary machining pass.

Price the remaining operations

Planing, jointing, straight-line ripping, ripping to width, crosscutting, sanding and custom profiling are separate tasks. A low rough rate can still be the right purchase for a shop equipped to do them efficiently. For a buyer without that equipment, a finished product may cost less overall. Include setup charges, minimum runs, transport between shops and the cost of rejected or undersized parts.

Thickness language and usable dimensions

5/41¼ inchesActual supplied section and tolerance
6/41½ inchesStock condition and machining allowance
8/42 inchesFinished section and drying condition
12/43 inchesInterior moisture and expected yield

These are rough-stock labels, not a promise that every retail product has that actual thickness. Finished nominal products and profiled boards follow their own supplied dimensions. Use the seller’s documented tally basis for invoicing and actual dimensions for fabrication.

How to compare drying options

Fireside Sawmill separates green, air-dried and kiln-dried listings. That is valuable because it makes the processing choice visible. It does not establish that every board under a category has the same moisture content, dimensional stability or lead time. Confirm the material that would actually fill your order.

Ask who is responsible if the desired finished size cannot be obtained after machining. Clarify whether drying defects, internal checks, end splits or excessive movement are handled under the seller’s written terms. Retain the original tally and moisture records when those details matter to your acceptance standard.

Custom milling without budget surprises

Send a profile drawing, reference sample or dimensioned section. Identify required faces, groove location, tongue-and-groove fit, shiplap overlap and any fastening constraints. Confirm that effective cover is different from overall width where the profile overlaps. Include tooling, setup, minimum quantity and a sample approval step when appropriate.

Schedule the process in order: confirm stock, review the drawing, approve any sample, complete machining and inspect before dispatch. Do not assume a generic milling lead time applies to a custom job. A change to final thickness or face can change coverage, fasteners and the amount required. Recalculate the quote after that change.

A PURCHASING CALCULATION

A purchasing calculation

Hypothetical rough stock costs $500 plus $150 machining and $100 extra handling. Comparable finished stock costs $700 delivered. The rough option totals $750 before considering any additional yield loss.
